The Foothills area is located in the Northeast section of Albuquerque, situated at the base of the Sandia Mountain range. This unique area is comprised of many distinct subdivisions including Sandia Heights, High Desert, Glenwood Hills, Glenwood Hills North, Kachina Hills, Rebonito, La Ultima, La Villita, La Vista Grande, Vista del Rey, Pheasant Hills, El Dorado, Cibola, La Charles, Princess Jeanne Park, Brentwood Hills and Holiday Park, amongst other fine neighborhoods.

The Sandia mountain range is largely encompassed within the Cibola National Forest.Part of the range is protected land known as The Sandia Mountain Wilderness and home to the Sandia Peak Ski Area.   “Sandía” is the Spanish word for watermelon, due to the dusting of watermelon/reddish color of the mountain range at dusk. The Sandia Foothills open space contains approximately 2,650 acres of steep sloped hills intersected by gravelly drainages at the base of the Sandia Mountains. Elevation ranges from 5,720 to 6,800 feet above sea level. Plant species include a unique variety of grasses and wildflowers i.e.,  Cane Cholla and Prickly Pear cactus. Single-seed Juniper and Piñon trees are also common to the beautiful landscape. Wildlife in the Foothills includes Mule Deer, coyote, Black Bear, cougar, rabbit, Rock Squirrel, lizards and rattlesnakes, as well as a wide variety of colorful birds unique only to New Mexico.

The Sandia Foothills provide an excellent variety of recreational opportunities including hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking, just to name a few. Picnic shelters are located at the Elena Gallegos Picnic grounds near the Menaul and Embudo Canyon area. Trailheads provide access to the Foothill trails as well as the Sandia Mountain Wilderness Area. This mature, picturesque and established area of custom homes is within close proximity to shopping, fine and casual dining and numerous accomplished public and private schools.
